Chiefs hit by Pulu's Sevens injury

The Chiefs and All Blacks Sevens have both been rocked by a broken arm suffered by half-back Augustine Pulu.

Two-Test All Blacks No.9 Pulu suffered the injury to his right arm during New Zealand’s semi-final win over Fiji at the HSBW Sevens World Series leg in Sydney on Sunday. He missed the last-gasp 27-24 final win over Australia.

The injury was confirmed by coach Sir Gordon Tietjens, who was uncertain of the extent of the damage and how long the 26-year-old will be sidelined for.

Pulu made his international sevens debut in December but adapted quickly and has become a key figure as New Zealand’s playmaker.

It is also unclear when he will be fit to rejoin the Chiefs, whose Super Rugby season begins against the Crusaders on February 27.

The Chiefs are well-served for half-backs, boasting All Blacks Tawera Kerr-Barlow and Brad Weber in their squad.

Pulu broke his right forearm in the final round of the Super Rugby regular season last year, which ruled him out for two months. It’s not clear if the latest injury is in the same place.
