Eddie Jones has recalled back-row Tom Wood for the end-of-year Tests with Dave Attwood and Charles Ewels also included in the 33-man squad.
Wood, 29, last played for England at the 2015 Rugby World Cup and hadn’t featured in a squad under Jones.
But with England currently without four back-row players due to injury — James Haskell, Sam Jones, Mike Williams and Jack Clifford are all sidelined — Wood’s form at Northampton has earned him a recall.
He will hope to add to his 42 caps when England open their campaign against South Africa on Nov. 12 while Gloucester’s Ben Morgan is also given the nod.
England are also without Maro Itoje and George Kruis for the end-of-year internationals so Bath duo Ewels and Attwood are brought in to bolster the second-row.
Ewels is one of six uncapped players in the group with Kyle Sinckler (Harlequins), Nathan Hughes (Wasps), Mike Haley (Sale Sharks), Alex Lozowski (Saracens) and centre Ben Te’o (Worcester Warriors) included.
Gloucester’s Jonny May is also back in the mix having recovered from injury with Marland Yarde and Semesa Rokoduguni also named with Jack Nowell and Anthony Watson sidelined. Northampton’s Paul Hill and Sale’s Josh Beaumont are excluded.
“With a number of influential players missing through injury we have two weeks to prepare a robust and resilient team to meet the challenges set for us in the Old Mutual Wealth Series,” said England head coach Jones. “Our training camp in Portugal is a great opportunity to spend a week together, focus on putting our game plans in place and for new players to understand the England way.
“We’re looking forward to being back in front of a passionate Twickenham crowd and I’m confident we can prepare well and put together a matchday 23 which is full of pride, energy and commitment to give South Africa the game of their lives.”
England start their four Test programme against the Springboks on Nov. 12 and then face Fiji, Argentina and Australia as they look to end the year unbeaten.
