England, Jones, Itoje up for World Rugby gongs

Eddie Jones and England have been shortlisted for awards by World Rugby following an outstanding start to the Australian’s Twickenham reign.

Jones has been nominated for coach of the year after winning all nine Tests since being appointed Stuart Lancaster’s successor in the wake of last autumn’s failed World Cup.

The 56-year-old is competing for the award alongside Steve Hansen of New Zealand and Ben Ryan, who steered Fiji to a first gold medal in the nation’s Olympic history on sevens’ Games debut at Rio 2016.

Earlier this year England completed a first Grand Slam since 2003 and followed up that success with 3-0 series whitewash of the Wallabies and are on the team of the year shortlist alongside the All Blacks and Fiji sevens.

In a hat trick of shortlist Red Rose appearances, 21-year-old second row Maro Itoje is vying with New Zealand’s Anton Lienert-Brown and Ardie Savea for breakthrough player of the year.

The nominees for world player of the year are to be announced on Nov. 7.

“The World Rugby awards celebrate excellence in rugby, honouring the world’s greatest players, coaches and teams,” World Rugby chairman Bill Beaumont said.

“Each person on the shortlist on the various shortlists thoroughly deserves their nomination.”
