South Africa have opened the new World Sevens Series campaign with an impressive tournament win in Dubai, beating Olympic champions Fiji 26-14 in the final.
After going through pool play unbeaten, the Blitzboks hit the ground running on Saturday, thrashing New Zealand 40-0 in the quarter finals.
Wales proved no match for South Africa in the semis, as they breezed through to the final on the back of a 36-5 win.
The final looked to be taking a similar course to South Africa’s previous games with Cecil Afrika and Branco du Preez scoring early to put Fiji behind 14-0.
Fiji showed resilience scoring tries either side of the half to level the game at 14-14, but South Africa found another gear.
Chris Dry, later awarded player of the final, edged the Blitzboks ahead before Seabelo Senatla scored his 11th try of the tournament to seal the result.
England finished the tournament third after a 38-10 win over Wales in the bronze play-off.
The Blitzboks head home to Cape Town next week for the second leg of the World Series.
