The Barbarians have confirmed they will meet the All Blacks at Twickenham on November 4, an announcement which ends any hope of England playing New Zealand this year.
The Rugby Football Union was looking into the possibility of lining up a match between the world’s top two sides as a late addition to the end-of-year Test programme. The match, had it been given the green light, would have taken place on Nov. 4 but the All Blacks have pushed ahead with previous plans to face the Baabaas.
Confirmation of the New Zealand-Barbarians match, pending the approval of the NZRU board, means the All Blacks will not face England until 2018 but for the Baabaas, it offers the famous invitational side a chance to face the world’s best team.
“The entire Barbarians Committee would like to thank the RFU for approving this fixture against New Zealand,” Barbarians chairman John Spencer said.
“For the record, and contrary to some recent media reports, the Barbarians have a strong and very collaborative relationship with the RFU, and any suggestion that the RFU has not acted correctly in any part of the discussions around staging this fixture is unfair and wrong. “
