Lions hooker Owens stunned by freebies

British & Irish Lions hooker Ken Owens has revealed he was taken aback by the amount of free items he received at the team’s administration day at Syon Park Hotel in London.

The Lions squad met for their traditional pre-tour ‘Messy Monday’ get-together this week and were handed a remarkable 64 items of free clothing and accessories, including 36 pieces of team-branded training kit and 28 items of bespoke formal wear.

Owens, who is appearing on his first Lions tour after 50 Wales caps, said: “It’s actually more than I have got in my house, in my wardrobe. I’ve got my clothes sorted for the next 10 years.”

Making his Wales debut in 2011, Owens has been contracted to PRO12 side Scarlets since 2006: “It’s slightly different to my kit drop at the Scarlets.

“We have got two very, very big kit bags, which is 15 gym T-shirts and vests and all sorts, two suits, plenty of shirts, shoes.”

Due to his commitments to the Lions, Owens will not be part of the Wales squad to face Tonga and Samoa in June. Interim coach Robin McBryde named his 32-man squad for those games on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the 41-man Lions squad will leave for New Zealand on May 29.

Their 10-match schedule includes three Tests against the world champion All Blacks in Auckland (first and third Tests) and Wellington.
